My Song is My Weapon UPDATES
I was asked by the folks at PledgeMusic to come up with my 10 favorite protest songs for a Spotify playlist. This is an impossible task, as there are way too many wonderful choices spanning from Joe Hill’s (1911) “The Preacher and the Slave” to Janelle Monae’s six-and-a-half-minute “Hell You Talmabout” from last year. So I will focus mostly on songs that somehow left an impression on me as a kid having a political coming of age. And I was a rather odd and obsessed kid at that. I couldn’t wait to come home from third grade to watch the Watergate trails on TV. My first “protest song” was called “Nixon Was A Bad Man.” I wish I remembered the lyrics.
