Merry Xmas From The Family
Merry Christmas From the Family
I recorded this fab Robert Earl Keen song in 1996. At the time, Atlantic records had asked me to come up with a holiday song. I wrote the Hanukah hit, “Jesus Was a Dreidel Spinner”. The folks at the label, did not like it one bit, so I had to come up with something last minute. A friend then played me “Merry Christmas from the Family”, and I knew that I had to cover it.
While recording the song, I made everyone drink whiskey – cheap whiskey. This song had to be played sloppy and full of clams (jazz slang for mistakes). Halfway through you can hear the drummer drop his sticks and fail to come back for the next beat. It was a wonderful mess, and a good time had for all.
The video was shot at an acquaintance’s house. There was no art direction. That house was a frigging redneck, car parts in the front yard, real deal.
I’m not sure what kind of outfit I had on, but I do love the Seven Deadly Sins Gretsch that I played.Tweet
